Commercial History of Fort Mill

Fort Mill was established in 1873. Its name is a nod to two historic buildings in the area: a British fort and a flour mill. Fourteen years later, the creation of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Company emboldened its namesake as a true city of manufacturing. The company remains in Fort Mill today, albeit under the name Springs Global and part of a larger organization headquartered in Brazil. Fort Mill is also home to several other large businesses, such as Mood Media, a leading provider of ambient music, and Comporium, a regional telecommunications company. Fort Mill's proximity to uptown Charlotte and its location in the Metrolina area make commuting to and fro a viable option.
