History of Matthews

The town of Matthews has changed names on multiple occasions.  Matthews was originally settled by cotton farmers in the early 1800s.  They cleared the land of natural growth and called it Stumptown in observation of the tree remains that spanned the area.  The name changed in 1825 to Fullwood, after the postmaster chosen for the area, John Miles Fullwood.  In 1879, the town was officially incorporated as Matthews by the state of North Carolina.  This final and current name came from Edward Wilson Matthews, director of the Central Carolina Railroad, which connected its lines to the town five years earlier.

Commercially, Matthews spans a wide spectrum.  Matthews boasts the headquarters of two well-known companies: Harris Teeter, the beloved southern supermarket chain, and Family Dollar, the national dollar store institution.  On the other hand, Matthews has a modern and vibrant downtown area which has attracted a healthy variety of restaurants, bars, offices, and shops.  The town supports a farmers market every Saturday morning in which growers hailing from no more than 50 miles of Matthews sell their crops.  Every Labor Day Weekend, the town hosts a festival called Matthews Alive which attracts thousands and thousands with art, food and live music.  Matthews Alive demonstrates the town's commitment to improving the community by donating all proceeds to local non-profits.
